GPSR for US sellers: what American Etsy and Amazon shops need to sell to Europe

The GPSR applies to products made available to consumers in the EU, wherever the seller is. If your Etsy, Amazon, eBay or Shopify store ships to Europe, it applies to you.

The checklist for US sellers

  • EU responsible person (Art. 16): an EU-based operator whose name and contact details appear on your product, packaging or parcel and in your listings.
  • Technical documentation, including an internal risk analysis, kept for 10 years.
  • Traceability: a batch/type number plus your business name and address.
  • Safety information in local languages: German for Germany, French for France, and so on.

Differences from US rules

There's no direct equivalent of a CPSC certificate for most general products. Instead, the EU expects a documented risk analysis. Children's products and toys follow separate EU toy rules (CE marking, EN 71), similar in spirit to CPSIA but different tests.
