GPSR label requirements: what has to be on your product and packaging

The GPSR sets out what information must physically accompany a product. For small sellers, a simple printed label or swing tag usually covers it.

Required information

  • Type, batch or serial number or another element allowing the product to be identified (Art. 9(5)). A SKU plus batch/date code works well for handmade items.
  • Manufacturer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and electronic address — email or website (Art. 9(6)).
  • EU responsible person, if the manufacturer is not in the EU: name and contact details (Art. 16).
  • Warnings and safety information in a language consumers in the country of sale can easily understand, as determined by that member state (Art. 9(7)).

The product is too small for a label

Where the size or nature of the product does not allow it, the identifier and contact details may go on the packaging or in a document accompanying the product — e.g. a jewellery card, a swing tag or an insert in the parcel.

Which languages?

The GPSR leaves language rules to each member state: Germany expects German, France French, Belgium Dutch/French/German, and so on. If you ship across the EU, a multilingual safety insert is the practical solution.

GPSR Kit produces a printable A4 label sheet and a multilingual safety insert for each product. Try it free.
